Transcript of first Event-specific chat for 2008 event Sunday Jan. 6, 2008.
12:41:***: parky (~63f0e12a@beautifullosers.org) has joined the channel
12:41:Kim: U r early! Welcome!
12:42:parky: So here I am? Right?
12:42:Kim: Yes you are! Interesting experiment. I have no idea what will happen!
12:43:parky: Me neither. Been at least a year or two since I logged in to chat; will be interesting and fun.
12:43:Kim: Yes, very nice to see you here!
12:43:parky: Believe we’ll have a few others — I’m just here early on account of ensuring that I could get here at all — couldn’t log in via Files.
12:44:parky: It’s interesting, Kim, that the first Event, in Montreal, was planned via chat — ICQ IIRC. Worked well enough, I blv.
12:44:Kim: Yes will be interesting to see people jump those technology hurdles!
12:45:Kim: Yes so was Hydra to some extent and to a lesser extent New York.
12:50:Kim: So the three ladies expected here are all shown in DSCN6953 in http://homepage.mac.com/evocative1/LCN2007/PhotoAlbum235.html
12:51:Kim: A whole series of images there with them, Lila, Tori, Christine and Tori’s boyfriend Joel.
12:53:parky: Right. Tnx. Names and faces, ya know.
12:55:Kim: OK so now in 6953 from left to rights it is Joel Tori Lila and Christine.
12:56:parky: Am I ever multitasking as we wait. E-mailing on one hand, downloading music on another, monitoring this on another, tracking a music order on another. Plus whatever surfing I can work in, which at the moment isn’t much.
12:56:Kim: Thanks for posting the message on the Forum, Tony and I replied and so that will help others!
12:58:parky: Yes hope so. Do you know by chance if the Files login has been acting up lately?
12:59:Kim: I am not sure, many people have always complained bitterly about it!
1:00:***: evelyn (~18d7ba6d@beautifullosers.org) has joined the channel
1:00:Kim: The hour is upon us! So we will see what happens!
1:00:Kim: Hi!
1:00:Kim: Welcome!
1:00:evelyn: hi!
1:00:evelyn: hi parky
1:00:parky: Odd. I once was a pretty regular chat person; worked like a charm back then.
1:00:parky: Hey Evelyn. Great to see you.
1:01:parky: So to speak.
1:01:evelyn: I had trouble connecting for a few minutes
1:01:Kim: Yes there has been a software upgrade, many new features and quirks!
1:01:parky: You’re not alone. So did I; appealed to the Forum for help and got it.
1:01:evelyn: I use Wen’s link
1:01:parky: What does tha t mean?
1:01:Kim: beautifullosers.org
1:02:evelyn: Wenslau created a link
1:02:parky: Ah so. You just go to that URL?
1:02:evelyn: I can’t use the forum link
1:02:Kim: New site, sort of a protest against Forum.
1:02:evelyn: I have it on my favourites list
1:03:Kim: It is not much used as a Forum now Wens’s site but has other useful features.
1:03:parky: I originally logged in via ICQ or Messenger myself, but got lazy and opted for Files link and it worked fine. But as I was saying to Kim, I haven’t been chat-ish for a long time now.
1:03:evelyn: no!it just doesn’t work - not a protest:-)
1:04:parky: I vaguely redcall lthere being another Forum-type site within the past year. But haven’t been tracking at all.
1:04:Kim: There have been no new posts on Wens’s site for quite a while.
1:04:evelyn: my timing is off, so I’m not usually here when there are a lot of people
1:04:***: Don (~cebf2734@beautifullosers.org) has joined the channel
1:04:Kim: hi!
1:04:evelyn: hey there
1:05:Kim: Welcome!
1:05:evelyn: welcome
1:05:parky: Hi Don
1:06:Don: Is this thing on?
1:06:evelyn: yep!
1:06:Don: Sorry… I meant as in a microphone…
1:07:Don: Marvelous technology. One of these days I fully intend to enter the 21st century.
1:07:parky: No, we’re here. Just some of us trying to do too much at once. I’ve got a couple of huge downloads going on as we speak and trying to monitor there too.
1:08:evelyn: my lil old laptop is poised for a crash
1:09:Don: Kim, maybe you can start by giving us a status report.
1:10:Kim: Yes OK.
1:11:***: chanson (~jirc@75.153.229.1) has joined the channel
1:11:chanson: I’m on
1:11:evelyn: hi chanson
1:11:chanson: Hi Kim!
1:12:Kim: Hi!
1:12:Kim: OK let me introduce Christine!
1:12:Kim: Christine Hanson is the administrator for Cohenights Arts Society and our financial person. She is a musician and an experienced fund raiser in the arts. The triumvirate of Christine, music promoter Peter North, and I have done much of the day to day planning of the 2008 event so far.
1:13:***: chanson has quit IRC (Bye bye)
1:13:***: chanson (~jirc@75.153.229.1) has joined the channel
1:13:parky: That was short.
1:14:evelyn: wb christine
1:14:Kim: She will be back. Left by accident. So in addition to the artists listed on the event web pages we have others confirmed and one big name we are negotiating with.
1:14:chanson: Thanks.
1:14:parky: Will that big name say something to the Europeans in our midst, do ya think?
1:14:***: Kjell (~kjelling@86-62-159-22.no.ventelo.net) has joined the channel
1:15:parky: Hey Kjell, welcome aboard.
1:15:evelyn: hi kjell
1:15:***: Fiji (~fiji@ip-83-142-117-186.enterpol.pl) has joined the channel
1:15:Kim: Yes sure.
1:15:Kjell: Hy
1:15:Fiji: Hello
1:15:Kim: We should know in a week.
1:15:parky: Howdy again
1:15:Kim: But otherwise all is going well.
1:16:Kim: Christine, Fiji is Pawel who does the event webpage.
1:17:chanson: Hi Fiji (Pawel)!
1:17:Fiji: Hi Chanson
1:17:Kim: The 2010 event will be in Crakow Poland so they would like to learn from us.
1:18:chanson: Ok. Well, we hope to set a great example!
1:19:Fiji: Kim: last week Krakow mayor decided that all tourist information centres and etc. should use Krakow, because there are too many versions: Kracov, Cracov and other. So, Krakow ;)
1:20:evelyn: cool! I’ll find out where my grandfather lived!
1:20:Fiji: great!
1:20:***: Gypsy_Wif (~18ab9c7b@beautifullosers.org) has joined the channel
1:20:stranger: Welcome to #cohenfans, Gypsy_Wif. You seem to be new here. #cohenfans is a chat room for people who like Leonard Cohen’s work. Oddly enough (or not?) his work isn’t discussed here often though.
1:20:stranger: It can sometimes be very quiet here. If you want to see more people, come here in the evening (western european time).
1:20:stranger: I am your resident chat robot. I hope you have fun here.
1:20:stranger: Bot maintained by Wenslauw (wenslauw@gmail.com)
1:20:Don: Kim/Christine, what’s your best guess on the numbers? I assume that there are many, like me, who are coming but haven’t registered. Do you know how the number of registrants to date stack up against previous events at this date? And are we getting much interest from europe?
1:20:evelyn: hi gypsy
1:20:Fiji: hi Gypsy_Wif
1:21:Gypsy_Wif: Hi all
1:21:parky: Way to go GW
1:21:Gypsy_Wif: Well I had a great teacher
1:22:Kim: We hope that Tori and LIla may also join us this afternoon. Here is a link to a picture of the three of them with Tori’s boyfriend Joel: http://homepage.mac.com/evocative1/LCN2007/PhotoAlbum235.html IU am helping Tori get in now. 6953 is one picture with the three of them.
1:23:Kim: I think the numbers will be very solid once we announce the final lineup.
1:23:Kim: People have more incentive then.
1:23:Kim: So in two weeks or so.
1:23:Kim: The situation is different. Lots of local interest.
1:23:parky: What are th numbers right now?
1:24:Kim: I don’t know that.
1:24:Gypsy_Wif: How is the situation with rooms at the University?
1:25:chanson: The rooms at the university have been set aside for us.
1:25:Don: 60 rooms?
1:25:Kim: Yes.
1:25:Don: I see we’ve also got a hostel on Whyte. How would that compare to Lister Hall?
1:26:Kim: Less restrictive and fewer services.
1:26:Don: What about price?
1:26:Kim: Cheaper.
1:26:Don: Terrific.
1:27:Don: One of the great things about the Event is the way it brings people from around the world.
1:27:evelyn: does it have private rooms?
1:27:Don: Cheap rooms encourages people to pay for the travel.
1:27:Don: The cheaper the rooms, the more Europeans I think.
1:27:Kim: I don’t know. Lila is the expert on the hostel.
1:27:Gypsy_Wif: Heck the more of everybody
1:28:Kim: Where is the link on Wen s’s site to get here?
1:28:Kim: Would like to send that to Tori.
1:29:Don: In Berlin, I suggested we promoted the idea of “country-western” Cohen. There seemed to be some resistance from Edmonton. I still think it’s a good theme. Do the Edmonton organizers want to avoid a C-W connection?
1:29:Gypsy_Wif: Is there a site that has all the information, or is it on several sites?
1:30:chanson: This is the link to the hostel on Whyte Ave. http://www.hihostels.ca/alberta/en/index.aspx?sortcode=2.2
1:30:evelyn: thanks
1:30:Kim: I am not against it if it appeals, it is how Leonard started.
1:31:Don: And much as we urban Albertans like to think we’re no longer C-W, it helps place Edmonton and Alberta for those who know nothing about us.
1:31:evelyn: it’s another facet of Leonard
1:31:parky: Absoutement.
1:32:evelyn: no longer C-W? what about the stampede?
1:32:Don: Stampede is too early in the month.
1:32:parky: Stampede, sadly, will be well over.
1:32:Don: I take it we’re also scheduled to avoid Klondike Days?
1:32:parky: However — the Rockies will still be there.
1:32:parky: Probably.
1:33:Don: What about promoting Klondike Days for those who want to arrive earlier?
1:34:Don: We’ve got a world-class publicity campaign to bring travellers to Edmonton. Let’s piggy-back.
1:34:chanson: Edmonton Klondike Days have been re-named “Edmonton Capital Ex”
1:34:Kim: I think it is after, it coincides with Calgary Fok Fest and so that is a goo dlink, we are sharing artists with Calgary Folk Fest.
1:34:Gypsy_Wif: With the availability of less expensive accommodations extended stay is possible.
1:34:chanson: Edmonton Capital Ex Days: July 17-26, 2008
1:34:Kim: OK
1:34:Kim: Cool!
1:34:Don: Capital Ex? Not nearly as good a marketing tool.
1:35:parky: Aarrgghh. Why the name change, do ya think?
1:35:evelyn: awww, looks like I’ll have to take a really long vacation
1:35:chanson: I don’t know. The name change pre-dates my tenue in Edmonton.
1:35:Don: Well, you can also take a week to canoe the David Thompson routes.
1:35:evelyn: Klondike Days sounds better
1:35:***: Wenslauw (~wenslauw@62.140.137.125) has joined the channel
1:36:evelyn: hi Wens
1:36:Wenslauw: hey
1:36:Don: Like the idea of connecting with Folk Fest. The same weekend?
1:36:Kim: Yes the city has already been very helpfu in promotion, that’s where the material Ann Vriend and I presented in Berlin came from.
1:36:Gypsy_Wif: The Folk Fest sounds like a good idea.
1:37:Gypsy_Wif: Are you saying it is the same weekend
1:37:evelyn: an Edmonton City wide Events calendar should be posted
1:37:chanson: The Calgary Folk Fest (calgaryfolkfest.com) dates are July 24-27
1:38:Fiji: hi Wenslauw
1:38:Kim: Calgary Folk Fest is right before and during.
1:38:Kim: We have good cooperation with them.
1:39:***: Don has quit IRC (CGI:IRC (EOF))
1:40:chanson: This website (www.festivalcity.ca) profiles all the different festivals in Edmonton.
1:40:Kim: Yes we can post a calendar, also for the region, nnot just the city, Alberta.
1:40:***: Don (~cebf2734@beautifullosers.org) has joined the channel
1:40:Kim: wb!
1:40:evelyn: wb
1:41:Don: Sorry, I crashed. Did I miss key info on Calgary Folk Fest and our event?
1:41:Kim: It is before and during our event.
1:41:Kim: We are sharing artists with tme, good cooperation.
1:42:Don: Some weeks ago, someone suggested a Festival Express — arriving in Edmonton by train.
1:42:Don: I wonder if we should try something with the train from Calgary.O
1:42:evelyn: maybe we can arrange group trips to other local events before or after the Event
1:42:parky: From Calgary. Or from Vancouv3r; could be fun and would be affordable, kind of.
1:43:Don: Vancouver takes a day and a half and is pretty expensive.
1:43:evelyn: That sounds great
1:43:Kim: Yes I think that will be an excellent idea, very scenic!
1:43:parky: But all those Ricky Mountains man. . . .
1:43:parky: Rocky
1:43:Don: Well, it would get some Europeans over…
1:43:Gypsy_Wif: Oh yes the Blue Canadian Rockies
1:43:Don: Pavel, what’s your European perspective?
1:44:Gypsy_Wif: Sounds like it would make a great song title.
1:44:parky: Problem really is that it would require a touch of logistics, from someone somewhere.
1:44:parky: Bing Crosby? The Byrds?
1:44:evelyn: The Leonard Cohen Festival Express
1:44:parky: Works for me.
1:44:Gypsy_Wif: Though I have never been to Vancouver.
1:45:parky: Vancouve is terrific. Victoria too. Hoping to be there in the next few weeks.
1:45:Wenslauw: Must be very expensive to get from Europe to Edmonton
1:45:Fiji: hm
1:45:Wenslauw: and it must take ages
1:45:Fiji: OK I may write about myself
1:45:evelyn: I’ve never been there either, looking forward to it!
1:45:Fiji: I did not make a decision if i go to Edmonton or not
1:45:***: tori (~ellement_@S01060004e218e2fd.ed.shawcable.net) has joined the channel
1:45:Fiji: For people from Europe it is a really big adventure
1:45:stranger: Welcome to #cohenfans, tori. You seem to be new here. #cohenfans is a chat room for people who like Leonard Cohen’s work. Oddly enough (or not?) his work isn’t discussed here often though.

1:45:Don: It doesn’t take long to fly. You go over the north pole.
1:46:Kim: hi!
1:46:Fiji: as far as I know a lot of people will make decision in february/march
1:46:Wenslauw: tori? amos?
1:46:Kim: Tori Sheldon
1:46:Wenslauw: don, I doubt there are direct flights
1:46:Gypsy_Wif: Well all I have to head off now. Catch up later…Parky & Don take notes.
1:46:Fiji: people still believe in cohen’s tour
1:46:tori: Hi!
1:46:Wenslauw: hi tori
1:46:Kim: Tori Sheldon assists me and is my right hand person at work on medical stuff. She is is change of the Thursday picnic on the river bank, and will also probably look after the needs of Serena Ryder at the event as she did for Crystal Plamondon at our September 2007 event. She is a board member of Cohenights Arts Society.
1:46:Kim: Christine Hanson is the administrator for Cohenights Arts Society and our financial person. She is a musician and an experienced fund raiser in the arts. The triumvirate of Christine, music promoter Peter North, and I have done much of the day to day planning of the 2008 event so far.
1:46:parky: Later GW
1:46:Fiji: i think there will be maybe 20-30% participants from europe
1:47:***: Gypsy_Wif has quit IRC (CGI:IRC)
1:47:evelyn: but isn’t the euro much more than the dollar?
1:47:Fiji: it is
1:47:Fiji: much more
1:47:Wenslauw: 1 euro = 1.45 USD here
1:48:evelyn: so it’s to your advantage to come
1:48:Don: Canadian dollar has been rising faster against the US$ than the Euro.
1:48:Wenslauw: still a lot of money
1:48:tori: the us dollar and canadian dollar are pretty much equal now
1:48:Don: What would make the Europeans want to come?
1:48:evelyn: we’re going down the drain
1:49:Kim: The fun of the train woudl not be the speed but the comradeship and fun times on board and the great scenery!
1:49:Wenslauw: evelyn, pray, like your president…
1:49:Wenslauw: sorry, couldn’t resist
1:50:evelyn: looking forward to change1
1:50:evelyn: !
1:50:tori: canada definitely has a lot of beautiful sites to be seen
1:50:Don: Most Europeans don’t understand the vastness
1:51:Wenslauw: don, it scares me! :)
1:51:parky: Best glimpse of the possibilities of the train would be the movie Festival Express — document on the 1970 train tour with Janis Joplin, The Band, Grateful Dead and tons of others. Great shots of gigging aboard the train (and being very inebriated and such).
1:51:Kim: Canada much larger than the US!
1:51:tori: i saw part of that! (i’m a grateful dead fan)
1:51:Kim: Yes that was what I had in mind too, and Janis’s monologue about it in Ball and Chain!
1:51:***: Tim (t.a.vincen@82-46-82-102.cable.ubr02.trow.blueyonder.co.uk) has joined the channel
1:51:Don: I knew a Bulgarian arts group who flew to Toronto and drove to a festival in Nova Scotia. They didn’t realize it would take two days.
1:51:Kim: Hi Tim!
1:51:Wenslauw: Timmaaay!
1:52:Tim: hi kim, everyone
1:52:Tim: yo wens!
1:52:evelyn: hi tim!
1:52:parky: Hey Tim, long time man.
1:52:Kim: OK we will get copies of Festival Express!
1:52:Wenslauw: I just want to add Bulgarians are not typical Europeans. Even I know that’s quite a tip
1:52:Wenslauw: trip
1:52:Wenslauw: even
1:52:Tim: hi evelyn! hi parky! you’re right…
1:53:Fiji: Don: I do not know. I have some plan, I want to visit Toronto, maybe UStates, I also think about taking a bicycle - you have wonderful track around Edmonton. 1st Aug there is a total eclipse, but You must move far north to see it. i thnk the biggest problem is in $ - it is just a expensive trip. If someone has money, he will do it, if he has not, you cannot make him came
1:53:parky: All of which argues for the university residences.
1:54:Don: Or the Whyte avenue hostel.
1:54:Don: They’re close together?
1:54:parky: Montreal and New York were both university residence based.
1:54:Kim: Yes well it is like that for every location. It’s OK, we have inexpensive very nice accommodations, many innovative ideas on ways to get here, it will all work out.
1:54:Fiji: Don: and if someone goes to canada, he will probably want to stay there 2-3 weeks
1:54:tori: the whyte ave hostel and the residences are within walking distances
1:54:Don: Now… that’s interesting, Pawel.
1:55:Kim: There is good LRT to get downtown quickly.
1:55:Don: Maybe we could set up other places to visit.
1:55:evelyn: and we could have group trips to different local events before and after the Event
1:55:Kim: Yes certainly, we coudll help with that.
1:55:Don: Come to Ottawa. Parky and I will show you around.
1:55:tori: there will be a lot of events during that time of the year in Edmonton
1:55:Wenslauw: Most Europeans don’t fly half way across the world for an event that lasts a couple of days. The appeal of NYC and Berlin helped in the last events. After the event you could explore the city.
1:56:Don: If Europeans were going to spend a couple of weeks, then maybe the train trip is viable.
1:56:Kim: Some will be I am sure.
1:56:parky: Maybe make a new position on your management team Kim — collateral or somesuch. Would address Calgary, tours elsewhere, train possibilities, places like Jasper and Red Deeer and Banff and even south of ?Calgary for that matter.
1:57:Don: Heads Smashed In buffalo jump.
1:57:Kim: Yes Waterton Lakes on the border very intersting.
1:57:Kim: etc.
1:57:Kim: Sure we can do that.
1:58:Don: I think the “collateral” position is a great idea. Do you have someone who could take that on, KIm?
1:58:Kim: And also favorite sites in the mountains.
1:58:Kim: Yes my wife knows a lot about that stuff Elaine.
1:58:Kim: She introduced me to Banff!
1:59:parky: There ya go then. She’s hired.
1:59:Kim: But Lila also, she is living in Banff.
1:59:parky: Tough life.
1:59:Don: I think it will be important to highlight this “collateral” stuff on the website.
1:59:Don: Offer a total Alberta experience.
1:59:Kim: Yup we can do that.
2:00:parky: Yes — as an ex-Albertan who still gets out there once or twice a year I agree with that.
2:00:Wenslauw: Tim, didn’t you start your new job recently?
2:00:Kim: I can get a travel professional to help us, or Edmonton Tourism.
2:01:evelyn: post some beautiful photos
2:01:Kim: Yup that’s easy!
2:01:Tim: yep, wens, just before christmas… going well so far, except I’m waiting for a replacement pc… have you started yours yet?
2:01:Wenslauw: yeah, started last wednesday
2:01:Wenslauw: they gave me a nice dell laptop ;)
2:02:Wenslauw: using it at the moment, my pc’s are in my new house. all unplugged and passive…
2:02:Don: Folks, I have tolog off soon.
2:02:Don: This has been excellent.
2:02:Tim: cool! actually, I should be picking up an (old) dell laptop sometime soon, with mine - still looks to be a good spec though
2:02:Wenslauw: later, Don
2:02:evelyn: bye Don
2:02:Tim: bye don!
2:02:Don: I’m really looking forward to Edmonton.
2:02:Kim: Bye!
2:02:Don: Are we going to have another chat room discussion?
2:02:Fiji: bye Don
2:02:Kim: We look forward to seeing you here!
2:02:Kim: Yes each Sunday.
2:03:Kim: Same time.
2:03:Don: Look forward to it.
2:03:Don: Bye
2:03:Kim: Bye!
2:03:***: Don has quit IRC (CGI:IRC)
2:03:parky: Will be back then. I hafta bail too — chip the ice off the back door before dinner.
2:03:Tim: have fun, parky! talk to you soon I hope
2:03:evelyn: bye parky
2:03:Kim: Don accompanies late night songfests for the fans with his guitar, great guy! Bon vivant
2:04:tori: bye!
2:04:Kim: Thanks for joining us!
2:04:parky: Right. See ya folks. Tnx, Kim, for setting this up; looking forward to future iterations.
2:04:parky: bibi
2:04:Kim: See you next week!
2:04:***: parky has quit IRC (CGI:IRC)
2:04:tori: this will be the same time next week, right?
2:05:Kim: Yes it is best for Christine and is similar to tradition Sunday chat time, just three hours later.
2:05:Kim: The fans are used to scheduled Sunday chats but they have not occurred for years!
